Health-e-People – Connection Health Information and Service Delivery. An amount of $180,400 was received by a consortium which sought to improve men’s health. The project sought to build on two web sites, one operated by Depressionet and the other by Mensline. Both sites provide information to health professionals and consumers. Funds were granted by The national Office for the Information of Economy.

Youth Place – Grant $25,000 The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal provided financial assistance for the construction of a youth centre, associated plant and equipment and salary for a youth support person. Completed in 2002, the Youth Place provides a variety of entertainment and activities including:

Art Craft Days
First Aid Courses and
Preparation of community events such as car wash fundraisers.

Special Olympics Australia A grant of $15,000 helped support a research project the purpose of which was to measure the improvement of intellectually disabled person’s health through this participation in sport. Special Olympics provides sports skills training and athletic competition for children and young people with a disability. About 5000 athletes take part in activities throughout Australia. Funding was provided through the St. George Foundation.

Volunteer Small Equipment Grants – 2003 - Support for refugee children was facilitated through a ‘whole-of-school’ initiative which targeted children, parents, teachers and the wider community. Working on the belief that recently-arrived refugee children needed their experiences normalised and secure, the project allowed for two counsellor/advocates to be employed. The success of the program was due in part to the negotiations of the terms and conditions under which the project was implemented. It took into account issues of teacher release, timetabling and staff consultation. Funding was made available through the Department of Family and Community Services.

Cooloola Landcare Conservation Project Program - Using funding from the Mitre 10 grants scheme and other s, the Gympie & District Landcare Group has undertaken a number of riparian revegetation projects. These projects include Scrubby Gully Revegetation Project. Over the past two and a half years the group together with local supporters, has planted over 33,000 plants. Various community groups have adopted a number of sites for planting and maintenance.

National Staff Volunteer Grant Program - Wheel chair access to a local Scout Hall was made possible with a grant from this grant program. Operating under the auspices of the National Australia Bank, bank staff are able to nominate a community group/non profit organisation that they volunteer with, for a $2000 grant. Two community groups each month are selected for a grant.

Community Benefit Fund - In Queensland the G.C.B.F. allocates one-off grants of up to $30,000 to approved non-profit organisations. Successful outcomes include the following:

XLNT RT 4 UTH – Free youth workshops - The purpose of the grant was to maximise the benefits of having a shared library gallery and building. It centred on using workshop space and youth space within the Hervey Bay City Council Library (Qld). Partners to the project included local high schools. Funds came from the Library Innovations Grant.

Schools throughout Australia have been successful with their grant applications to the Community Grants program conducted through Australia’s Open Garden Scheme. School projects have included the following:
- Construction of a nature walk and naming plaques.
- A teaching garden centred on water conservation, composting and plant nutrition.
- Development of a curriculum- based play garden. Plants and trees were planted to encourage local fauna and birdlife.

Arts Queensland funding was made available to schools for the following purposes:
- The employment of local authors to conduct workshops at a children’s literature festival. The project sought to promote reading among young people and to provide support for emerging Queensland writers and publishers. Funding of approximately $8,900.00 was made available.

Students were able to take part in a cultural experience as part of a festival. Funding of $5,000.00 allowed for the engagement of a number of professional presenters.

Grants from a variety of s including philanthropic trusts and community-business partnerships resulted in the following successful outcomes for schools:
- A secondary college, which was able to convert a reading program into a highly successful and commercially viable professional literary service.
- A project which resulted in improvements in a range of educational matters, including increased parental participation in school activities, reductions in suspensions and improvements in reading, spelling and maths.
- The design of a computer software program by volunteer staff from a financial institution. The program managed the rostering of staff for a special project.
- A school was able to purchase a multi-media projector. This allowed a teacher to work with more than one student at a time during learning technology programs.

School for behaviourally disordered. - A new school for behaviourally disordered young people in out-of-home care, is managed by Berry Street , Victoria. The school caters for students who do not fit into mainstream education. Funding was provided through the Telstra Community Development Fund.

70 Schools receive $5,000 e-Learning Grants - The Commonwealth Bank in conjunction with National Literacy & Numeracy Week, makes the grants available for the purpose of assisting students develop critical literacy or numeracy skills through an e-learning project. A 2002 successful grant resulted in the production of reading material of a high interest, but low reading level. Another 2002 grant provided for the connection of the school’s Language Unit classroom to the rest of the computer network.

RTA Community Education Grant 2003 - Micah Projects Inc. (Qld) received a $15,000 grant to implement the Community Linking Program. Micah works with people with disabilities. The project aims to support people in residential facilities. Funding allowed for the employment of a Project Officer who will visit supported accommodation facilities in the Brisbane area.

Green P.C. - This is not a grant program, however Green PC seeks to break down the digital divide by making refurbished computers available to organisations that might not usually be able to afford a new computer system. When coupled with funds from other s such as a sponsorship or grant making body, organisations may be in a position to purchase a computer.
